Update: ODM's Marende elected speaker

After three rounds of voting, Kenneth Marende of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement was declared the new speaker of the Kenyan parliament. Marende defeated Francis Kaparo of PNU by a vote of 105 to 101. Farah Maalim, also of ODM, has been declared the deputy speaker.

Perhaps the opposition victory will tone down the rallies planned for the rest of the week.

In a preview of what may await Kenya's 10th parliament, the first point of order involved an opposition MP asking which president MPs should swear their oath to, Raila Odinga, the people's president or Honorable Mwai Kibaki, the Electoral Commission's president.
